She was born on October 31, 1925, in Zion, Illinois, the daughter of Dorothy M. Deranian and her husband, Dr. John D. Derani. Her death was preceded by her parents, brother John and sister-in-law Mary Ann. Kathy loved walking and driving with her family, and on her way to school and her job as a nurse.
A few years later, she used the skills she learned to help her father build a house, and she also served the Zion community. In the 1960s Kip was an elected member of the Zion Park Board, of which he was president and was instrumental in the construction of the Shiloh Park golf course. He and Kathy were active members of the Church, where they raised their children for many years, and of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He attended law school while he was running his business, and in 1964 he received his Juris doctorate from Kent College of Law in Chicago. In a country that followed the tradition of the United States, it was the first academic degree awarded after graduation from medical school.
